Mediterranean Cruise (Part 2)

Hello, are you ready to do a little virtual traveling with me? It's time to share my Mediterranean Cruise (part 2). Here is the preview and Part 1 in case you miss seeing the posts. Our destination for the 1st port of call was Livorno. It's a port city on the Tyrrhenian Sea on the western coast of Tuscany, Italy. And that is where the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa is located. That morning my kids and I took a guided tour to the tower. I can't helping posing this photo just like a lot of tourists do!
The tower's tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground that was too soft on one side to properly support the structure's weight. This photo shows how uneven the base is...
The tilt increased in the decades before the structure was completed, and gradually increased until the structure was stabilized (and the tilt partially corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It was a bit rainy and cloudy that morning...luckily, it didn't rain while we were taking photos.
This is the courtyard near the Leaning Tower
In 1987 the tower was declared as part of the Piazza del Duomo UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the neighbouring cathedral, baptistery and cemetery.
I hope these photos will give you some perspectives about the Leaning Tower.
Ready to climb the Tower? The stairs were really really tight and small. The seventh floor was completed in 1319.  There are seven bells, one for each note of the musical major scale. The largest one was installed in 1655. The bell-chamber was finally added in 1372. The building of the tower took 185 and 195 years to complete.
We finally got to the bell tower...
And the views from the top....it was beautiful!
The view from outside the bell tower

Later that day, I went back with Dr. John and he took this amazing sunset photo.
Lastly I came across with this article about sharing vacation photos over FB. In this case, my blog here...it's the LAST thing I want to make anyone feel BAD about not being able to go to these amazing places with my travel photos. If you feel that I am being insensitive about sharing my vacation photos here, please let me know/send me a private e-mail. I will consider not posting them. BUT if that is not the case, please also let me know.
In my personal view, I think by sharing the traveling experiences, we are broadening the horizons TOGETHER!

We'll be off to Rome next (maybe? let me know!)! Ciao!

I personally love seeing your vacation photos, Virginia. We watch travel shows on TV because we know we won't a lot of the world in person & it's even more fun to see pictures from the perspective of someone I "know." Of course, I'm a little jealous, but isn't that OK? I love seeing a family that has a good time together--Thanks for sharing!

I saw that article today too, Virginia. The only vacation photos that make me feel envious are the ones of people lying on a warm ocean beach with clear blue skies. Especially when it's January and it's freezing outside!

I think YOUR vacation photos are wonderful! I learn something each time you share them and I'm so happy for you and your family that you're able to travel together and enjoy seeing the world! Loved this post - you look so cute on the steps in the tower! Hugs! :)

I LOVE seeing your photos. If someone doesn't...then they can just move on.... they don't have to stay... I like your thoughts about sharing the travelling experience and broadening our horizon together. Thanks for sharing. Love the one of you pushing the Leaning tower!

Hi Virginia, I personally love seeing your vacation photos. They are amazing. My sister is in Europe at the moment & I'm loving her photos as well. I think people who have issues with sharing vacation photos need to find something else to worry about. There are a lot worse things out there than these gorgeous photos

Virginia, love seeing and reading about your trip. The photos are beautiful! I also love to see your sweet family together. It would be nice to travel more someday, but since my husband doesn't like to fly, we are limited to going where we can drive. So I enjoy taking these trips with you! Hugs!

I enjoy seeing your pictures and love that you and your family are so open about sharing your lives with us. Jealous people will always find a reason to be jealous, please don't let them ruin it for the rest of us that enjoy sharing in your journeys.

I was there also. I loved Pisa. :) And we were making fun with picturing the tower too. :) Too bad you didn't visit mine and Tina's country - Slovenia which is near Italy. I'm sure you'd like it.

I think you do a WONDERFUL job of sharing. I love seeing these places in the eyes of someone I "know". And I love learning about the places with your tidbits. I REALLY don't want you to stop.

One of the keys to preventing dementia is to keep the brain learning. It's a reason I craft and a reason why I feel your blog is so helpful. Please continue.

There will always be naysayers in the world. They can skip your blog that day. That's where their power lies. Your blog belongs to you not them.

And I am glad you had a good time:) I enjoy traveling through your eyes:)

I really enjoy seeing your travels and the excellent commentary that goes with the lovely pictures. As a retired international flight attendant, I deeply miss the more glorious parts of the job - but never the jet lag. I'm quite happy being an armchair traveler now and I thank you for being such a wonderful tour guide!

I personally enjoy seeing trip pics my blogging buddies post! The way I look at it people can choose not to read the post if it causes them that much distress! I've really enjoyed your travel posts Virginia as my hubby and I have been to some of the same places and I love the trips down memory lane! Plus I love hearing what your impressions were after seeing the same sights! And reading your commentary and seeing pics of places we haven't been just gives me more ideas of where we might want to go in the future! So keep 'em coming!! P.S. The day we toured Pisa there was a thunder and lightning storm-we couldn't believe they still let us climb up to the top of the tower:).

wow, wow, wow!!! Beautiful pics! That one of you on the tower steps made me a little claustrophobic! eek!

I love seeing the virtual tour of your vacations. Your family takes great pics and the education is fun too! I say, if people don't like the travel photos well then keep on truckin'!

So glad you share your beautiful travel photos. I love seeing/reading about travel for three reasons:
1. I get to see places that I will never see in real life.
2. I may now what to visit that city/country.
3. I love seeing bloggers having a great time and feel their excitement.

Please continue to share!! Read that article and related ones and you'll see that updating your status improves your mood, and frankly it's your mood that matters, right? *LOL* Yes, interaction with others improves your mood. I don't think we needed a study to figure that one out ;)

Truly, your photos bring those legendary, historic places to life for me and I appreciate that immensely :)

Have a marvelous day!!

There is always going to be whiners and complainers, and it is not your duty to please them.

This is your blog and you can post anything you want on it and if someone doesn't like it they can make the choice to not read what you have written and they have the ability to leave whenever they want.

It's simple, just keep doing what you are already doing.

Virginia....I go along with you via your lovely pictures. You've given me scenery that my eyes, in real life, will never see. Your sharing is wonderful because you take great pictures of great places. I "imagine" myself in the photo and really get a kick of the places you've taken me. Thank you.

LOVE how you are "pushing" the tower over..Most people try to "hold" it up!

I look at anyone's travel photos for inspiration, as well as in this case, your interpretation of your destination.

Since retirement I have taken up papercrafting in a big way and look to your blog and others' for inspiration. That goes for the travel photos as well.

I follow a young lady in Dublin. She crafts and is an excellent photographer. Since my husband and I visited there last spring I enjoy her photography of her local area.

Bye the way, I always share Dr. John's bon mots with my husband!

I enjoy all your vacation photos, Virginia - such exquisite views of wonderful places. It would be sad if a person couldn't be happy for his/her friends having fun. I get to "travel" without leaving my couch - LOL.

Well, you certainly don't make me feel bad when I'm looking at your fabulous travel photos! I love armchair travel (as well as the real thing) and it inspires me - I want to visit those places you've shown.

I do think some social networking sites (FB, Twitter) have the potential to be negative (I am on FB but only as one of the many means of keeping up with my two sons who live on the other side of the world) because there isn't a lot of purpose to them. But I find cardmaking blogs are motivational and inspirational. And yours is definitely one of them!

I have never heard of such a thing---we all have our own experiences and that is our life. I am thrilled that you are sharing such beautiful pictures and was just thinking how fortunate you and Dr. John have been to be able to share these experiences with your children--now almost grown, but you have been able to enrich their lives and also to see it through their eyes too. They will be able to build on this for the rest of their lives and hopefully someday will be able to share it with another generation. I love that they go with you and seem to be enjoying it.
Keep it up, please.
I was able to travel with my parents as a child, while my dad was in the Air Force and it is fun to see some of the places I visited as a child.

Oh..Dear Virginia...please rest assure that you have never ever been insensitive in any way shape or forms...
You have always shared your art and life experiences so generously on your blog and that is also why we LOVE you! Don't doubt that for a second. ok?!!

I consider myself rather well traveled and yet I have learnt so much thanks to you and to your own perspective on the places you have visited.

Thanks to you, I feel like I know Lake Louise and my mind has been opened up thanks to you sharing the marvelous photos from that place. I have added it to my list and I would never have thought about doing so if it hadn't been for you.

You have helped me see how certain places in Europe have changed...and some for the better...
I visited the tower when i was a little girl and it looked in much poorer conditions, so that brought a smile on my face...

I could and maybe I should have written this message in a private email but please know that I truly believe you have a gentle pure soul and it shines through everything you do and share.

Don't ever change Virginia!
Look at these grown-up children of yours so happy and proud of their Mama!! Beautiful in and out...

+ I'm glad i'm not on FB! pfff...

Hugs~

Oh please, don't stop posting your photos! I can't see why ANYONE wouldn't want to live vicariously through you and the family! Plus, seeing you all with happy, shiny faces makes ME so excited for my friends, and isn't that the whole point?

Anyway, as always - I sailed away with you and climbed every stair, looking at these gorgeous photos! XOXO

Well, if you end up NOT posting these (which I hope is not the result) can you PLEASE send them to me in email?!? I've been waiting all week to enjoy these! I get what the article is saying and do believe that to be true. Of course you're going to get a little jealous seeing these beautiful photos, who wouldn't want to be there themselves? But hopefully it makes you excited thinking one day you might get the same opportunity, instead of making you feel bad about yourself. I would definitely keep posting them.

And I have to laugh ... you are toppling the tower, Virginia! But you look so sweet and innocent : ) So glad you went back at dusk, that sunset photo is such a gem!!

I love to see your pics and read your info and also see your family. That pic of you pushing the Leaning Tower is so cute and funny!

LOVE your travel photos, V! Don't consider not doing them for a minute! They also make your blog so varied from the usual cards.
I am jealous - this is a beautiful part of the world that I hope to visit someday, too!

Beautiful, Virginia! I have been to Pisa a few times. Mostly just changing trains, or flying in and taking a train somewhere else. :-) The last time I was there was on my honeymoon (almost 14 years ago) and it was pouring rain. It was a soggy day, but my husband did get to see that tower. I have never seen it with such a beautiful sunset though!

Keep sharing your holiday photos. I don't comment on every post, but I do read (and totally enjoy) them all!

you know i love traveling around the world with you and your family here and would love to see more!!! =) that last sunset photo is amazing. what beautiful colors and thank you once again for all the pretty pictures. we weren't allowed to get very close to the tower the when we were there. i think they were doing the "un-leaning." but love the view from the top and yes, everyone has to have one of the classic photo like the first one you have!! =)

I'm LOVING these photos, Victoria!! I really appreciate you sharing them and don't feel envious at all. In reality, I know that it's highly unlikely that I'd ever be able to visit these places. It's a blessing to me to be able to view these amazing photos and share the joy of your experience!
